Revision as of 15:07, 15 November 2016
Funimation acquired the Shin-chan US license in 2005. Funimation's dub takes many liberties with the source material and was heavily Americanized. Many sexual references, dark humor, and references to current popular American culture were added. Shin wants allowance to buy crystal meth (drugs), Kazama ('Georgie Herbert Walker Prescott III' was his name in this dub) was a ultra-conservative U.S. Republican and it features many jokes about Jews and viagra.
New, previously non-existent backstories were created, as well as significantly different personalities for the characters. For instance, the unseen father of Nene (known in the dub as "Penny") was suggested to be physically abusive toward both his wife and daughter, and this was used as a source of black humor. Principal Enchou was rewritten as a half Romani, half Peruvian man with a complicated prior life that includes a stint as a magician, in which he accidentally injured scores of audience members. Yoshinaga-sensei (known in the dub as "Miss Polly"), Shinnosuke's teacher, was rewritten as a kinky nymphomaniac, while Shin's schoolmate, Kazama, (known in the dub as "Georgie") was portrayed as an absurdly hawkish conservative.
Test episodes
Template:Infobox tvseason The Test Run of FUNimation's Shin Chan adaptation aired from December 2001 to August 2002 weeknights on UPN. The six episodes aired were composed of vignettes that were mixed and matched across the show's 14 year history. None of the episodes used were prior to 1998, and only one vignette was digitally animated.
The test run was a success, and prompted the network to order a complete first season.

Season 3
Template:Infobox tvseason Season Three of FUNimation's Shin Chan, which was airing only in reruns, UPN picked up the series for a third season, to be aired in 2005. only 8 of the 26 episodes were aired, due to low ratings in both the reruns and the new episodes. However, the network did show the unaired episodes on their website.
In 2005, both Fox and The WB decided to air new episodes of the series. Fox showed the series between their Sunday night lineup as well as showing it weeknights. Fox only showed 6 episodes. The WB later aired all the remaining episodes that were aired on the previous networks.
